UAE employers offer better housing, schooling benefits

Living and working in the UAE offers incredible opportunities—but it also comes with high living costs. Between rising rents and ever-increasing school fees, employees are feeling the financial pressure more than ever. That’s why housing and education allowances have become powerful tools in the race to attract and retain the best professionals in the country.

According to Mercer’s 2026 Middle East Housing and Schooling Report, these benefits are no longer considered optional extras. Instead, they are now key pillars of competitive compensation packages across the Emirates, shaping career decisions and improving quality of life for many residents.

For most UAE professionals, housing allowances remain one of the most important parts of their employment offer. The report found that around 70% of employers continue to provide a separate housing allowance, while 25% include it as part of a consolidated salary, and the remainder offer it through total cash packages. With rent prices still climbing in major cities like Dubai and Abu Dhabi, this support plays a critical role in ensuring financial stability.

A growing number of companies are also helping employees manage upfront rental costs. In a market where landlords often request a full year’s rent in advance, over half (52%) of UAE employers now pay housing allowances upfront rather than monthly. This change allows workers to avoid taking short-term loans or dipping into savings to cover large initial payments.

However, the report shows that allowance reviews are not automatic. Between 2024 and 2026, housing benefits rose by only 4% on average, and nearly 60% of companies only adjust their policies when necessary, not on a regular basis. This means some employees may find that their allowances don’t keep up with rising market rents—something worth checking with HR to ensure fair alignment.

Education support follows a similar pattern. Schooling benefits remain widespread, with almost nine in ten UAE employers offering education coverage. Policies often vary by seniority: around 36% of companies provide uniform benefits for all staff, while 64% differentiate depending on role or grade.

Yet, only 19% of organisations updated their schooling allowances in 2026, mainly in response to increasing tuition fees or to stay competitive in the talent market. For families with school-aged children, understanding the details of these benefits is essential for long-term budgeting and educational planning.

Experts say these trends reflect a broader shift in employer priorities. Andrew El Zein, Mercer’s UAE Career Products Leader, explained that housing and schooling policies are now critical elements of how organisations compete for skilled professionals:

“Top talent is in high demand in the UAE. When companies offer market-aligned allowances and communicate them clearly, it gives them a strategic edge in both hiring and retention,” he said. “This isn’t just about covering costs—it’s about shaping an employee value proposition that supports growth and strengthens loyalty.”

Mercer’s findings make it clear that in today’s UAE job market, benefits like housing and schooling are no longer just financial support—they are key to work-life balance, career satisfaction, and organisational success. For employees, understanding these policies can make a major difference in overall financial well-being; and for employers, they are becoming a decisive factor in winning the war for talent.
