Avoid these 5 mistakes in your UAE driving test

Taking your UAE driving test can be nerve-wracking — even for those who’ve spent countless hours behind the wheel. It’s the final step toward independence, but for many learners, that short ride with the examiner feels longer than the journey itself. Whether you’re a confident driver or just getting comfortable on the road, small mistakes can cost you big. The good news? Most of them are completely avoidable.

According to Dr. Suzanne Accetta, CEO of First Driving Centre, success in your UAE road test comes down to awareness, consistency, and calm. “The most common mistakes we see are poor observation, loss of control, and procedural errors,” she explains. “These are simple habits that can be fixed before test day with the right preparation.”

Here are five mistakes that could cost you your pass — and how to steer clear of them.

1. Not looking around enough If you think a quick mirror glance is enough before changing lanes, think again. One of the biggest reasons candidates fail is poor observation — forgetting to check mirrors, scan intersections, or do a proper shoulder check. Examiners look for constant awareness of your surroundings.

Make it a habit to check your mirrors every five to ten seconds. Treat it like breathing — automatic and effortless. And always glance over your shoulder before switching lanes. As communications professional Karishma H. puts it, “That one shoulder check can save you from surprises. My instructor drilled it into me, and now it’s second nature.”

2. Letting nerves take control You can know every rule in the book, but nerves can make your hands shaky and your steering uneven. It’s one of the main reasons learners lose vehicle control. “Nervousness can lead to oversteering or abrupt braking,” says Dr. Accetta.

The fix is practice — especially at slow speeds. Spend extra time doing hill starts, three-point turns, and parking drills. The more confident you are at handling your car in tight spots, the easier it will be to stay calm during the real test. Confidence grows with repetition.

3. Getting signals wrong Forgetting to signal — or worse, signaling the wrong way — is a sure way to lose points. Dr. Accetta calls these “procedural errors” and says they’re entirely preventable. “Use a consistent driving routine,” she advises.

Try a simple mantra before every move: Mirror, Signal, Position, Speed, Look. Repeat it in your head until it becomes automatic. And if you’re not sure what the examiner said, ask politely. Clarifying instructions shows maturity and confidence — both of which examiners notice.

4. Skipping your pre-test preparation Just like you wouldn’t start a meeting without reviewing your notes, you shouldn’t start a test without a quick warm-up. “A short checklist review helps candidates stay mentally sharp,” says Dr. Accetta. This could mean adjusting your seat, checking your mirrors, and running through your signal routine one last time before starting.

Dr. Accetta also highlights communication as a key part of passing. “Don’t hesitate to ask for clarification if directions are unclear,” she says. A confident, calm approach tells the examiner that you’re in control and paying attention.

5. Forgetting it’s okay to learn from mistakes The UAE’s driving test doesn’t just assess technical ability — it measures composure under pressure. Even strong drivers lose marks when they appear tense or impatient. Instead of seeing the test as a pass-or-fail moment, treat it as a learning experience. Each attempt gives you valuable insight into how to improve.

“By understanding these common pitfalls and practicing with focus, learners can approach their test with confidence and poise,” says Dr. Accetta.

So before your big day, take a deep breath, check your mirrors, and remind yourself why you started. Stay calm, stay focused, and drive like you belong on the road — because you do. Confidence, after all, is the best thing you can wear on test day.
